Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 and ACCPAC Applications
Q. Will Microsoft Windows XP SP2 'break' ACCPAC
Advantage Series?
A. NO. The increased security levels that are common
to an XP SP2 installation do not cause problems for typical installations
of Advantage Series (client/server or web deployments). Unusual
installations, however, such as using Windows XP as a server, or
a complex network connection environment may require you to configure
the software firewall that SP2 invokes by default, or make other
client specific adjustments.
Q. Does Phoenix Business Systems Technical Support
officially support these installations?
A. YES. Our technical support teams are prepared to support
you with this Service Pack (including the related ACCPAC Options(tm)
Products).
Q. What about the rest of the end-to-end solutions
such as ACCPAC CRM, WMS, HR, ePOS, etc?
A. At this point, we are not aware of any known issues relating
to XP Service Pack 2 and problems that it may cause with these end-to-end
applications. Our testing of every possible product and environment
combination, however, is not yet complete. We recommend that if
you choose to install SP2 you do so with diligence and take time
to understand the specific changes that this update introduces into
Windows XP environments (particularly relating to network connectivity).
Just because we aren't seeing any problems in our labs doesn't mean
that it isn't possible to create a situation where a firewall port
may need to be opened to allow bi-directional traffic to flow between
applications (ours or others).
Q. So, in Phoenix Business Systems's opinion should
I install this update?
A. YES. The risks associated with not keeping computers
up-to-date with all current service packs and security updates are
significant and growing. For that reason, we recommend the installation
of XP SP2 wherever practical. Generally speaking, most of the incremental
security implemented as part of SP2 can also be disabled after the
fact if required. For example, the firewall can be manually disabled,
or 'holes' can be opened, and the pop-up blocker can be selectively
disabled as well.
Important Notice: Not ALL applications are compatible
with Windows XP at this time. Microsoft reports that some of its
own products, including SQL Server 2000, Microsoft CRM, and a few
others are not currently compatible with SP2.
